The Wind, The Mine

from Who Becomes the Canary? by M.G. Clark

/

lyrics

Canary’s song echoes in the mine now
A hollow beat responds from below,
Beneath the granite clouds of ashes
The wolves are feeding in the snow.

They call this the face of progress
Endless riches beneath the earth,
Sparrow’s song is out of key now
As the hammers pound against the dirt.

The wounded dog sits by the fireplace
Recovery is a full-time job,
The world outside just falls apart now
Canary still sings through the fog.

Wolves they peer into the mineshaft
Canary hidden in the dark,
The hollow beat has disappeared now
A violent wind erupts from the hearth.
